NEW DELHI, February 24, 2022---Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ch. Anil Kumar said that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind, who claims to have created 12748 ‘smart classes’ at 1031 Government schools in Delhi, does not reveal the truth that most of these classes were not ‘smart’ at all, as they were only given a fresh coat of paint at an enormous cost of Rs 23 lakh per class room, from the earlier Rs 16 lakh per class room, proving that high levels of corruption had taken place in this makeover work.
Ch. Anil Kumar said that though CM Arvind boasts about constructing 20,000 new class rooms, the reality is that this figure does not cover even 10 per cent of Government schools. He said that in many schools, children continue to study in pota cabins, and there is 30 per cent shortage of teachers, including 755 principals, 131 vice-principals and 16834 teachers. He said that 24041 teachers are working on an ad hoc basis, and despite their protests, and Arvind’s assurance in his election manifesto that the guest teachers would be regularized, they continue to stagnate on temporary rolls.
Ch. Anil Kumar said that Chief Minister Arvind was lying through his teeth when he talked about the “Delhi Model of Education” everywhere, as just one new school was constructed in the past seven years despite the availability of 82 plots of land with the Delhi Government, and most poor children could not access online classes due to lack of facilities, including smart phones/laptops, internet connection etc. He said that due to shortage of teachers, the standard of education in Government schools has gone down drastically, particularly during the pandemic times, and the students who were promoted with a liberal dose of free marks, cannot stand scrutiny in any competition.
Ch. Anil Kumar said that over 2.50 lakh children were forced to leave prestigious private schools to take up admissions in Delhi Government schools as their parents could not afford to keep them in private schools after the Covid-19 pandemic had robbed many of them of their jobs and sources of livelihood.
