Every human being is born free and equal in dignity and rights. These rights, known as Human Rights, are essential for ensuring peace, freedom, and justice in any society. They protect individuals against injustice, discrimination, and exploitation and empower them to live with respect and equality.
On 10th December 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), declaring 30 fundamental rights and freedoms for all people, irrespective of race, religion, gender, nationality, or social status. These include the Right to Life, Freedom of Speech, Right to Education, Right to Work, Freedom of Religion, and importantly — the Right to Justice.
Among these, the Right to Justice holds a special significance. Without access to justice, other rights remain incomplete. It ensures that every individual has the legal right to stand against injustice and discrimination and seek protection through lawful means. In India, the Constitution from Articles 14 to 32 guarantees every citizen the Right to Equality, Freedom, and Constitutional Remedies.
Access to justice must be easy, affordable, and timely. Institutions like Lok Adalats, Human Rights Commissions, Women’s Commissions, Child Rights Commissions, and Consumer Forums work towards making justice accessible to every section of society. However, even today, in many parts of India, marginalized groups, women, children, the elderly, and minorities face discrimination and often remain unaware of their basic rights and how to seek justice.
It is the collective responsibility of the government, human rights organizations, civil societies, and each individual to spread awareness about human rights and justice. Every citizen must know their rights and duties, and also respect the rights of others.
A truly progressive and just society is one where no injustice goes unheard, and every individual feels protected and empowered. By promoting awareness and offering legal assistance to the needy, we can build a nation where fairness, equality, and human dignity prevail.
Let’s come together to protect, respect, and promote Human Rights and ensure equal justice for all.
